Introduction
Smart Homi was developed to address critical safety issues facing the Haenyeo (traditional Korean female divers). As the average age of the Haenyeo population rises, underwater accidents—particularly drowning due to fatigue or misjudgment—have increased drastically.
To mitigate these risks, I digitised the traditional “Homi” tool. The Smart Homi retains the familiar form factor of the original tool but integrates advanced safety features, including real-time water temperature monitoring, depth measurement, and haptic alerts for abnormal diving patterns.
Implementation
The system is powered by an STM32 microcontroller that acquires and processes sensor data to detect dangerous diving profiles in real-time. Upon detecting an anomaly, the device triggers an internal vibration motor to provide immediate haptic feedback to the diver.
Additionally, the system incorporates a high-visibility OLED display. This interface provides critical metrics in Korean and flashes clear visual warnings—such as “Too Deep” or “Return Immediately”—ensuring the diver can react quickly even in low-visibility conditions.
