Introduction
In 2024, I had the opportunity to work as a research intern at the Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo, supported by OECD and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA).
During this period, I developed a Multi-Robot Control System designed to assist in nuclear decommissioning operations by coordinating multiple robots within hazardous environments.
Implementation
To enable intuitive control of multiple robots, I developed a web-based user interface with control and telemetry monitoring functionalities. The frontend framework was designed and built using HTML and CSS, derived from the architecture of my previous “POSTECH Seismometer” project.
The system utilises a hybrid backend architecture with Node.js and Flask. The Node.js server manages the Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) Pioneer and its low-latency video stream, while the Flask server handles the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Tello and its video feed. To integrate these distinct services seamlessly for the user, I implemented an Nginx reverse proxy.
Communication with the Pioneer robot was established via MQTT and the RSNP protocol (Robot Service Network Protocol), specifically designed for teleoperation. The Tello drone connected directly to the main server via UDP socket communication.
Recognition: In recognition of the system’s innovation, the project won the RSNP Contest Committee Special Award at the SI2024 Conference (2nd Author).
Additionally, the overall results of the NEST programme, achieved as a research intern at the University of Tokyo, were awarded the OECD NEA NEST Award (Third Prize) at the OECD NEA Headquarters in Paris, France.
